This is going to be a quick post on motivation, and how you don’t need it. If you are either waiting for motivation, or trying to constantly search for motivation, you are going to be on a treadmill of mediocrity and inconsistency.
The problem with motivation is it is emotionally driven, and as we know with emotions, they evaporate faster than boiling water. So one day you will find yourself fired up and ready to take on the world. You either had a conversation which inspired you to get after it, watched a movie or documentary that sent you off the wall, or maybe you just saw a photo or video on Facebook which evoked some get-up-and-go emotion. Well this is great fuel to accomplish a task. Some of my best workouts have happened because of things such as this. But these things have no bearing on whether or not you accomplish anything in the long run. Once you come down from this euphoric rush of emotional motivation, what is going to get you in the gym the next day? What will keep your performance high and consistent? What will be the driving force in you getting done what you need to do?
This brings us to good old dedication. If you don’t have it, I would recommend getting it. And it is simple (not easy) to get. You just need to make a conscious decision and plan and dedicate yourself to it. Once this ‘thing’ you have dedicated yourself to has been in your life long enough, it will no longer be a task so much as it will be routine. It could be getting up at 6am to go for a walk, studying for one hour per day, or working at a thought out fitness or career plan. The key is, you cannot wait for motivation to strike to work on these plans. You must use dedication. Motivation will swoop in now and then, and will be good for a surge. But without hard dedication, motivation is nothing but abstract thoughts, and sporadic acts towards a goal.
It is for these reasons that motivation is NOT what you need, but dedication. If you want something, it does not matter if you feel like working towards it today or not. You will because you are dedicated. Leave the motivation to the Facebook meme’s. If you have dedication, you won’t be in need of such flighty sources of fuel.
